Trekking to Everest Base Camp

Mt. Everest, aka Sagarmāthā in Nepal, is the planet’s highest mountain. Its peak is 8,848 m above sea level. Mt. Everest attracts many climbers, some of them highly experienced mountaineers. While not posing substantial technical climbing challenges on the southern standard route, Mt. Everest presents dangers such as altitude sickness, weather, and wind, as well as significant hazards from avalanches and the Khumbu Icefall. As of 2016 CE there are well over 200 corpses on the mountain, some of which serve as landmarks. The 2017 CE Mt. Everest summit season kicked off to a big start, set to be the largest climbing season in the modern history of the mountain with 365 people on 39 teams from around the world, just on the south/Nepali side.

(South) Everest Base Camp is in Nepal at an altitude of c. 5,365 m and is a rudimentary camp site on Mt. Everest that is used by mountain climbers during their ascent and descent. Supplies are shipped to the Everest Base Camp by Sherpas or porters, and with the help of animals, usually yaks. It has become a "Global Village" for about two months every year as hundreds of people from around the world undertake expeditions to the mountain.

The 14-day Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most popular trekking routes in the Himalayas and is visited by many trekkers each year. Trekkers usually fly from Kathmandu to Lukla to save time. There are no roads from Kathmandu to Lukla and as a result, the only method of transporting large and heavy goods is by STOL plane. From Lukla, climbers trek upward to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, c. 3,440 m above sea level, following the valley of the Dudh Kosi river. It takes about two days to reach the village, which is a central hub of the area. Typically at this point, climbers allow a day of rest or do a day trip to Everest View Point (c. 3,860 m above sea level) for acclimatization. They then trek another two days to Dingboche (c. 4,260 m above sea level), before resting for another day for further acclimatization. Another two days takes them to Everest Base Camp (c. 5,365 m above sea level) via Gorak Shep (c. 5,140 m above sea level).

The Sherpas are a Buddhist ethnic group from the most mountainous region of Nepal, the Himalayas, and most Sherpa people live in Nepal's eastern regions. Sherpas are highly regarded as elite mountaineers and experts in their local area. They were immeasurably valuable to early explorers of the Himalayan region, serving as guides at the extreme altitudes of the peaks and passes in the region, particularly for expeditions to climb Mt. Everest. Today, the term sherpa is often used to refer to almost any trekking or climbing guide hired for trekking or mountaineering expeditions in the Himalayas, regardless of their ethnicity.

Namche Bazaar is a famous and remote mountain village in the Solukhumbu District; it is located within the Khumbu area at an altitude of c. 3,440 m. It is the main trading center and hub for the Khumbu region. Namche Bazaar is also popular with trekkers in the Khumbu region, especially for altitude acclimatization, and is the gateway to the high Himalayas. On Saturday mornings, a lively weekly market is held in the centre of the village where local people from the surrounding valleys spread out their agricultural products, and traders from Kathmandu sell their goods carried by yak trains or human porters into Namche Bazaar.

Adding Context to Street Portraits

Any half-length street portrait (interactive or candid, see: Making Decisions in Tamil Nadu) is often, explicit or implicit, also an environmental portrait which typically illuminates the subject's life, culture and surroundings.
There are three different ways to include, to photograph and to inform about the subject’s context in a head shot and/or half-length portrait:

(i) the relevant background: the photographer uses relevant areas or structures of the subject’s natural and/or cultural surroundings or background in order to convey interesting context information about the person being photographed; e.g. an artist in her atelier, a villager in the mountains, or a market woman at the marketplace. The background might be blurred, but relevant structures are still identifiable or discernible.

(ii) the significant detail: the photographer includes distinctive elements from the subject’s life, culture and surroundings, which can often be quite small but still significant and meaningful, especially if they are (a) parts and details, (b) symbols and logos, (c) contrasts and contradictions; e.g. the tribal nose jewellery of an Indian Adivasi woman, the masterpiece of an artist, or the camera type and lens of a street photographer. Those accessories can provide plenty of information about the subject’s context.

(iii) the facial features as such: the photographer takes only a close-up photograph of the subject’s face (e.g. an outdoor head shot in front of a neutral, heavily blurred, or even a pure black background) and acts under the assumption that the subject’s facial features and expressions, his or her gender, racial and cultural characteristics, age, wrinkles, facial tattoos, facial hair and beards, hair style, make-up, scars, etc. are sufficient clues for the subject’s life.

Below are three examples for (i) adding context by using relevant background structures:

Yellowing the Forehead

Many sadhus and Hindu devotees prefer to wear sandalwood tilakas on their foreheads. The area in which the yellow paste is applied is between and above the eyebrows, called the third-eye chakra aka ajna chakra. While a person's two eyes see the physical world, the third eye is believed to reveal insights about the future. The ajna chakra is the area that most schools of Hinduism consider the entry and exit point of the soul aka jivatma, and the brain area for thinking, concentration and memory. Applying sandalwood paste aka chandanam here has supposedly a cooling effect, aids concentration, and increases mind power. The soothing and antiseptic sandalwood paste connects the sadhus to their intuitions, gives them the ability to communicate with the spiritual world, and helps them receive messages from the past and the future...

The preparation of the sandalwood paste is a sacred duty fit only for the pure, so it is entrusted in temples and during ceremonies only to Hindu priests aka Brahmins. The paste is prepared by grinding wood by hand upon granite slabs shaped for the purpose. With the slow addition of water, a thick paste results, which is mixed with saffron or other such pigments to make chandanam. Chandanam, further mixed with herbs, perfumes, pigments, and some other compounds, results in javadhu. Both chandanam and javadhu are dried and used as chandanam powder and javadhu powder all over the Indian subcontinent.

Redefining Headwork in Asia

Carrying on the head is a common practice of human-powered transport in many parts of the world, as an alternative to or in combination with carrying a burden on the back or shoulders. People, especially women, have carried burdens balanced on top of the head since ancient times, usually to do daily work, but sometimes in religious ceremonies or, as a feat of skill, such as in certain dances.

Carrying and balancing a load on the head is widespread all over Asia. Today, women and men may be seen carrying burdens on top of their heads where there is no less expensive, or more efficient, way of transporting workloads. In India, women carry baskets of bricks and containers with concrete to workmen on construction sites.

Women in Asia in particular may have practical reasons for carrying on the head, as for many women it is well-suited to the rough, rural terrain and the particular objects they carry - like bundles of firewood on the Indian beaches of the Bay of Bengal.

Mountain porters, frequently called sherpas in the Himalayas (after the ethnic group most Himalayan porters come from), are an essential part of trekking and mountaineering. A porter's gear is typically simple but effective. A headband aka tumpline runs underneath the load and over the crown of the head, which bears most of the weigh. Tumplines are not intended to be worn over the forehead, but rather the top of the head just back from the hairline, pulling straight down in alignment with the spine. Nepali porters can carry loads weighing more than 100 pounds (c. 45 kg), mile after arduous mile, over steep Himalayan terrain.
